Do you plan to learn a new language? Mandarin perhaps? Do you feel intimidated already by the huge number of vocab to memorize? I’ve seen lots cheap dictionaries claim that they contain millions or even billion[!] words, but lots of research suggest that languages like Mandarin or English doesn’t have that many words, neither any other languages, and even more importantly we don’t need to memorize that much to be fluently conversant in a language.

George Zipf finds that given some source of text of language utterances, the frequency of any word is inversely proportional to its rank in the frequency table. Thus the most frequent word will occur approximately twice as often as the second most frequent word, three times as often as the third most frequent word, etc. For example, in the Brown Corpus the word “the” is the most frequently occurring word, and by itself accounts for nearly 7% of all word occurrences (69,971 out of slightly over 1 million). True to Zipf’s Law, the second-place word “of” accounts for slightly over 3.5% of words (36,411 occurrences), followed by “and” (28,852). Only 135 vocabulary items are needed to account for half the Brown Corpus.

It’s not exactly that way for other languages, but they’re pretty much exhibit the similar pattern. We’ll take a look at the frequency of words in Mandarin Language.

I found interesting data sets from opensubtitles.org that contain all words in the database of subtitles they have. For Mandarin language, they have 788 files that contain 97,909 unique words, 1,362,738 total word and 7,033,863 word count. I tried to crunch the data sets for the whole words, but it keeps crashing my old laptop , but even the list of 50.000 words already reveal the patterns. Well actually even the list of 5,000 words already reveal the same pattern anyway. It isn’t intended as a perfect sample of daily usage of the Mandarin Language, but movies pretty much reflect daily life don’t they?

5000 words is the minimum number of words to memorize for someone to reach the highest level of Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, (simplified Chinese: 汉语水平考试; traditional Chinese: 漢語水平考試), Chinese equivalent of TOEFL or IELTS. And guess again, we don’t even need to memorize that many words to reach, say, 50% or 80% highest appearance frequency of words. To reach 50% we just need to memorize 135 Mandarin vocabs (surprisingly similar to Zipf’s finding) but to reach 80% we’ll need to memorize 1321 words, to reach 90% we’ll need to crunch 3673 words. How much needed to reach 100%? I don’t even sure there is anyone who manage to do that, most of the words won’t be used anyway, why bother

If you finish your Advanced HSK test and score perfect 6, you’re likely to master around 92% of the words in daily use.

And by the way, lots of languages follow a similar pattern, when I’m done with the data, I’ll post the result.

The answer is out there, all we need is a good question.

Tips Pencarian Google

“Blog is dead” echoes everywhere. And indeed it’s been a really long time since blogosphere got a big news. But the latest big news, came from none other than the bid daddy of blogging, sparks a new light. WordPress announced an ad platform exclusive for wordpress bloggers called WordAds.

From the release:

“We’ve resisted advertising so far because most of it we had seen wasn’t terribly tasteful, and it seemed like Google’s AdSense was the state-of-the-art, which was sad. You pour a lot of time and effort into your blog and you deserve better than AdSense.”

Well, yeah I hope it will be much better than AdSense or any other ad platforms. I’ve realized that in the past couple of years, ad platforms like that have change the online publishing landscape, for good or worst. Top Notch content creators get their incentive to create more and better contents. But the others are just incenticized to copy, scrap, spam, profit, profit, and profit.

It’s not clear yet how WordPress would make the platform different or (hopefully) better. But if you want to find out, you should meet their criteria (I hope it’s worth the hassle ).

I’m not a fanboy, but I have a couple of those shiny iStuff. I’m not a fan of Steve Jobs either, but I love to learn from everyone. And he’s nothing short of inspirational figure for most of us, despite anything you might hate of him. In 1995, during the making of “Triumph of the Nerds”, TV series about the birth of the PC, Bob Cringely did an interview with Steve Jobs.

During the interview, Jobs was at his charismatic best—witty, outspoken, visionary. In the end, only a part of the interview was used in the series and the rest was thought lost. But recently a VHS copy was found in the series director’s garage. Now, the entire interview has been cleaned up with modern technology, and put into context by Cringely. Here’s some of the quotes from the interview.

“No one thinks about why they do things very deeply.”

“Learning to program teaches you how to think. Computer science is a liberal art.”

“Money is wonderful because it allows you to invest in things without having to worry about short term gain.”

“Many companies forget what it means to make great products. After initial success, sales and marketing people take over and the product people eventually make their way out.”

“When companies get bigger they try to replicate their success. But they assume their magic came from process. They try to use processes to substitute content.”

“The best people are the ones that understand content. They are a pain in the butt to manage but you put up with it because they are so good at content.”

“It’s that through the team, through that group of incredibly talented people bumping up against each other, having arguments, having fights sometimes, making some noise, and working together they polish each other and they polish the ideas, and what comes out is really beautiful.”

“The way to ratchet up our species is to the get better things to more people to. Products with spirit and creativity.”

“Humans are tool builders. We create things to amplify ourselves. The computer will rank at the top. It’s awesome tool ever.”

“What causes people to be poets instead of bankers? When you put that into products people can sense that. And they love it.”
